What is one of your favourite films? Any particular reason why?

Think of a film (or TV show or book) where the main character takes a big risk without a guarantee of a big benefit. Did that make you more excited, or more nervous?

Read Mark 1:14-20. What risks did these disciples accept when they chose to follow Christ? Why do you think they followed, despite the risks?

Imagine that you (with your age, job, location, etc.) were a non-Christian today. What risks would be involved in becoming a Christian? What benefits or assurances outweigh those risks?

What risks do you, personally, have to deal with on a daily basis? How do you deal with those risks? What is your general tolerance for risk on a scale of 1 (I take no risks) to 5 (stick me out in a coracle in the Irish Sea)?

How do you think your life would change if you took more “holy risks” – stepping out, trusting God to lead and provide? What might those be?

Ask the same questions about Barley Hill Church.

Pray for one another, particularly for risks you are taking or feel you ought to take.

PREPARATION - Jesus talked about His return in places like Matt.24-25 – so before coming to group this week try to read, & read around those chapters. Bring your reflections, questions, wrestling, insights to the group

What does Jesus teaching contain that shows us what a healthy attitude and way of living looks like,
in the light of His return?

What are the differences between Jesus first and second coming?

Read 1 Cor.15.12-19

Share what Paul says are the consequences for Christians if we who follow Him do not live in the conviction that Jesus is coming again, and that we are raised from the dead?

What is the reverse of such an attitude and outlook?

Read 1 Thessalonians 4.13-5.3
The church in Thessalonica was facing opposition and persecution,
hence the reason Paul writes here - to encourage them in difficulty.

How does Paul write about the Second Coming here – what are the key dynamics?

Paul gives a number of reasons for writing about the return of Jesus – what are those reasons?

Living in the light of Jesus’ return profoundly impacts the life you live
– look at Romans 13.11-12.

The Joy of the Spirit

When the truth of God is revealed

At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure. Luke 10:21

When the lost person finds the father who is waiting

I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. Luke 15:7

When a person is baptised

And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptised him.
When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. Acts 8:38-39

When righteousness is fulfilled

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, Romans 14:17

We looked at 6 aspects to express the quality of our relationships as the body of Christ in Barley Hill. These are:
Friendship Proverbs 17:17 (NIV) a friend loves at all times and a brother is born for adversity.
Support Romans 12:15 (NIV) Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
Forgiveness Ephesians 4:32 (NIV) be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Communion1Corinthians 10:17 (NIV) because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.
Encouragement Hebrews 10:25 (NIV) Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another.
Servant hood Mark 9:35 (NIV) Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

This week we celebrate the Easter story, and the glorious resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. On Sunday Ian spoke of the power of the cross, and the power of the resurrection. The cross which justifies – puts us right with God, where Jesus atones for our sin, the perfect sacrifice, where we are reconciled with God, and where we are redeemed, brought back at such great cost. Then the power of the resurrection – power to live for God every day, power to resist temptation, the power of prayer, of words and actions that make a difference to people’s lives – Christ in us, the hope of glory.

This week we return to the Salvation Story and the theme of the Law. On Sunday Ian talked about how Torah, for the people of God, was a blessing, how keeping it was an act of thanksgiving, and how through it God protected the life of His holy, set apart people. Ian pointed us to Ps.119 and all of the different ways that the psalmist speaks of the Law and its qualities – that it is so much more than a list of dos and don’ts and acts as a compass by which we today might still find our moral and ethical bearings.

This week we return to the theme of covenant as we see it worked out in the life of Abraham and his relationship with God

On Sunday Ian talked about the covenant relationship as being initiated by God, and demanding a response.

On Sunday Ian suggested that the new relationship that Abraham entered into with God was for the purpose of being a “blessing to others”. Today we are living under an extension of this covenant with Abraham (1 Peter 2.9), Jesus called it “the new covenant in my blood” (Luke 22:20), and he instigated a new command to go with it.
Jesus commissioned us to go and share his love with others and make disciples in Matt 28.18-20.
